![]() ![]() Here are a couple of ways in which red brick dust is used in New Orleans Hoodoo. In addition to its use in protective works, red brick dust has been used in a variety of different ways to exploit its powerful protective properties. Zozo LaBrique sold her dust for a nickel a bucket, and when she died a small fortune in those coins is said to have been found in her disreputable quarters. It is true that now many people will tell you that they do this only for reasons of cleanliness yet, that was its original meaning, and many stoops in the poorer section of the city have a well-scrubbed, whitish appearance, showing that brick dust has been used. It has long been a custom among some New Orleans housewives to scrub their front steps with brick dust, a tradition having a definite connection with Voodoo-the washing away of an evil omen placed on the house by an enemy. She was fixed, they say, by Marie Laveau because the latter wanted to rule the Voodoos alone. Zozo LaBrique, a well-known New Orleans street character, an apparently half-demented creature, who peddled buckets of brick dust. He writes about it in his book Voodoo in New Orleans: ![]() It should come as no surprise that Robert Tallant (1984) has something to say about red brick dust as well. Add a couple of drops of urine from a child and use the mixture as a floor wash, this will complete making your home hex-proof. Keep a pan of water that has been treated with a ball of Indigo bluing (anil) behind your front door, and draw crosses using cascarilla behind every door of the house. Simply get an old red brick, hammer it to dust, and spread the dust around the front of your house, using a broom. Orleanians since before the time of Marie Laveau swear by the power of red brick dust to ward off evil. In the The Life and Works of Marie Laveau, for example, Raul Canizares (2001) talks about hex-proofing the home Orleans-style: The use of red bricks has been mentioned in a number of writings. Since that time, red bricks remain plentiful and can be procured all over the city. The last reference to the Dumaine Street Brickyard in print was in connection with Voodoo Queen Sanité Dédé in 1825. It is said that red bricks were taken from the Dumaine Street Brickyard-the earliest place in New Orleans in which Voodoo rituals occurred-and were used in rituals and floor washes. In New Orleans, the most commonly known use for red brick dust is its application in pulverized dust form to the front steps of the home as a means of keeping evil away. Irosun powder is used in Ifá for divining purposes it is sprinkled on the divining tray by the diviner and figures of Ifá are marked on the tray in the powder (Bascom, 1991). Termites eat the outer white portion of the wood, leaving the heartwood to produce the reddish powder called osun. Irosun powder is red dust produced by termites from the barwood (Pterocarpus osun) and camwood (Baphia nitida) trees. Many suggest that the origin of the use of red brick dust can be traced to traditional African irosun powder. The shell was found within the grave and is assumed by archeologists to have functioned as the receptacle which held the paint used during body preparation rituals (Campbell, 1957). For example, a human burial ground was found at Caplen Mound on Galveston Island, Texas which had a clam shell covered with a thin layer of red ochre. ![]() Red ochre paint was used to imbue the newly departed with symbolic blood. Residues of red ochre clays have been found in burial contexts all over the world from Paleolithic peoples in Europe to Late Holocene peoples of the Americas. And, ochre pigments were used by Cro-Magnon artists who painted prehistoric cave paintings in southern Europe between 32,000 and 10,000 years ago. For example, medicinal use of red ochre clay is described in the Ebers Papyrus from Egypt, dating to about 1550 B.C. It comes as no surprise that red bricks would also be used in the makeshift shrines seen around the city in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.īut where did this practice come from? One can only surmise but, the fact of the matter is that red ochre clays have been used medicinally and ritualistically since the earliest of times. New Orleanians have found a variety of esoteric uses for them- they are the preferred writing implement for marking 3 cross marks on the grave of our infamous Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau and they are used in pulverized form at the front door to keep away evil. Red bricks can be seen all over New Orleans, from the old brick streets to the brick graves in the Cities of the Dead. ![]() In observance of the MLK Day of Service, please volunteer with your favorite cause or visit the AmeriCorps MLK Day website to find volunteer opportunities in your local community. You can manually add star ratings, color labels, and keywords and then use filters to find files quickly or search for photos using specific metadata criteria such as focal length or aperture. You can also create a Target collection and tap a key (or click a spray can tool on a thumbnail) to instantly add a shot to that collection. You can add files to collections manually or make files that match a specific criteria be automatically stored in Smart Collections. If a particular drive isn’t attached you can edit a smart preview of a file’s colors, tones, and composition and these changes will be applied to the full-size file when the drive is attached later. A Quick Comparison Between Premiere Elements and iMovie ![]() The axolotl is currently on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. Genetics and development Ĭompared with land-dwelling salamanders, the sexually mature adult Axolotl is a chimera (~ mixture) of larval and adult tissues. A mutation in hormone production slows the development of the non-sexual tissues compared to the gonads. So, it ends up as an adult which looks like a larva, except that it is sexually mature. ![]() This is an example of neoteny, a type of heterochrony. Axolotls in the lab have reduced pigmentation and end up being a lighter pink color, while axolotls that live in nature are a darker, brown to black color. With big branch-like gills, lizard-like limbs, and a cute perma-smile, it’s hard not to fall in love with the axolotl. Don’t worry, we’ll help you pronounce it. Phonetically, it’s “Ax-oh-lot-ul.” Atl means "water" and xolotl means "dog," after the Xolotl, the canine Aztec deity. While you might see plenty of white ones in captivity, the animal is normally greenish brown or black. White ones are known as “leucistic” and descend from a mutant male that was shipped to Paris in 1863. They were then specially bred to be white with black eyes (different from albinos, which generally have red eyes). Their feathery headdress is not just for show. The impossibly silly branches that grow from the axolotl’s head might not seem practical, but they’re actually the salamander’s gills. The filaments attached to the long gills increase surface area for gas exchange. Wild ones can only be found in one place. While you can find axolotls in aquariums and laboratories all over the world, it’s much harder to find them in the wild. The animals can only be found in the lakes and canals of Xochimilco, Mexico. ![]() The axolotl eats small fish, worms, and anything it can find that will fit in its mouth. They’re critically endangered.Īs a result of habitat loss, pollution, and the introduction of invasive species like tilapia and carp, these salamanders are being pushed closer and closer to extinction. In an attempt to revive the species, researchers have built “shelters” made from reeds and rocks to filter the water and create a more desirable living space. Unfortunately, the numbers continue to decline. There were about 6000 wild axolotls documented in a 1998 survey, but today, researchers are lucky to find any. Luckily, some have since been found roaming the water.įor a brief amount of time in 2014, biologists failed to find a single water dog, and feared the salamanders had gone extinct in the wild. And although it's not ideal, even if the elusive animal disappears from the wild entirely, the species continues to thrive in captivity. You can eat them.īefore the axolotl was an endangered species, Xochimilco natives would chow down on the salamanders. ![]() Axolotl tamales were a favorite, served whole with cornmeal. And here’s a handy tip – if you do a search on the Mac App Store, for a word such as ‘Marvel’, you’ll find that the search results will show two tabs. Some of the latest iPad games – such as the hugely popular Marvel Snap – are designed to run on Apple’s M1 and M2 processors, and the developers can also make these games available on the Mac App Store as well. ![]() The transition to Apple Silicon has helped to bring some new games to the Mac too. You do have to be careful here, though, as many F2P games are more interested in selling expensive in-app purchases rather than providing a fun game that you can enjoy without handing over loads of cash (this is particularly the case with card games, which constantly release new packs of cards for people to buy and collect). Quite a few of these F2P games will run on the Mac – the selection on the Mac App Store isn’t very good, but there are dozens of free Mac games on Steam and a few scattered around other games stores such as Epic and Gog.com. In recent years, there’s been a trend for ‘F2P’ games – ‘free to play’ – which can be downloaded and played for free, and then try to make their money by selling ‘in-app purchases’ (IAP) that let you buy new weapons or armour, or fancy clothes, pets and other accessories. There are, sadly, many games still available on the Steam store that will only run on pre-Catalina versions of the macOS, and we recently had to delete dozens of old games from our list of the best Mac games. And, just to make things worse, the arrival of macOS Catalina (10.15) a few years ago – which moved the macOS to 64-bit software and no longer supported older 32-bit software – killed off a lot of popular Mac games too. ![]() ![]() Apple has never been very interested in games on the Mac, and this has meant that Macs have never enjoyed the same range of A-List games titles as owners of Windows PCs or games consoles like the Sony Playstation or Microsoft’s XBox. The Mac games scene is – not to put too fine a point on it – a bit of a mess these days. ![]() in Michigan City, IN, in the Uptown Arts District.
